86. FARMERS AT THE CROSSROADS: TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE AND PROFITABLE FUTURE
Victoria Vyvyan, Robert Shepherd, Nick Shorter, Becci Berry
Friday 28th June 16:30 (60 Min)
IPGL Stage
English farming is embarking on a huge experiment, abandoning the much-criticised EU model of farm subsidies for a new system of voluntary payments for public goods – beneficial actions that the food supply chain doesn’t pay for, such as improving soil and water quality, planting trees and hedges, restoring peatland, creating wildlife habitats. It’s no exaggeration to see this as the next revolution in agriculture as farmers grapple with the challenge of food security and the twin crises of climate change and nature. A panel of farmers discusses their choices at this crossroads in farming policy and practice and their hopes and fears for farming’s future.
