78. NOSTALGIA: A CONSTRUCTIVE FORCE FOR LOST COMMUNITIES?

Friday 28th June 13:30 (60 Min)

Is nostalgia always and everywhere problematic, or can nostalgia for a lost past be a force for good? While some authors see nostalgia as a dangerous emotion, recent studies of so called left behind places in the North of England have shown how constructive nostalgia can motivate community action and help reinvent an ethos of mutual assistance. Author and Vice Chair of the Beamish Museum Dan Jackson together with social historian David Kynaston and Tom Clark, Contributing Editor of Prospect Magazine, discuss the changing fortunes of the concept of community over the past century and what can be done to help shape a more hopeful future.
