71. DYNAMO KIEV: THE GREASTEST FOOTBALL MATCH OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR

IPGL Stage
In Nazi-occupied Kyiv, a brilliant football team was put together at a bakery. Consistently triumphant, they were a source of inspiration for the local population. However, after beating a crack Luftwaffe side, the players were rounded up and four were killed. Inspired by a Hungarian film of 1962, John Huston made the 1981film Escape to Victory, starring Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone and Pelé. For decades the story was submerged beneath propaganda and myth. Were the players collaborators or heroes? What really happened in the game? Why were the players arrested? Only in the last few years has the truth begun to emerge.
